I'm not a 'real' Artist. Just like I wasn't a 'real' Writer. Until I started sharing my work; then people called me a writer. I remember when I first worked at WITS (Writers in the Schools). At orientation, we had to declare our writing genre. I watched people say, "I am a Poet," and I marveled at their bravado. Are you a poet because you write poetry? Or was there a special ingredient I was not privy too? I wrote poetry most of my life, but I did not refer to myself as a poet. At the time, I was the founding editor for the children's literary journal, Silver Rocket. My joy came from celebrating their voices. Not my own.
When I got my first book published, Shiny Bits In Between, I became an Author. Labels. They don't mean much, but we all seem to find comfort in them.
So this is my Artist blog. My Author blog is Georgina Key Author if you want to see my author self.
As writers, many of us have various creative outlets. Using our hands to make something can be a reprieve from being inside our heads when we’re writing. And when we’re not. So let's give ourselves permission to be more than one thing.
I am a Writer.
I am an Artist.
I am a Musician.
We can be all these things and more...shine on!
