inspiration

Claudy Jonstra has been an inspiration of mine back when I first began experimenting with felting. I'm in awe of the integrity of her process and the beauty of her pieces.

I met Daniela when she was doing a community art project here in Houston, The Civilized Moss. Her latest project is TOPOGRAPHIES OF TRANSFORMATION.

"The felting process is only possible with certain natural fibers like alpaca, mohair, cashmere and wool. The individual fibers become one through violent change. In wet felting it is by adding hot water, soap and movement, in needle felting it is through the repetitive stabbing and ripping of the fibers. They come together to produce a material stronger and more resilient than the individual strands. It is through shock that the materials are transformed." Daniela Edburg

Daniela’s explanation of felting resonates with me as a fiber artist and as a primary theme in my book, Shiny Bits In BetweenThe two main characters both experience ‘TRANSFORMATION through violent change’ resulting in a stronger and more resilient self.
